David Gentleman is a painter and printmaker, working in many mediums. He has:
- designed postage stamps and coins,
- designed the platform-length mural at Charing Cross on the underground.
- illustrated books for publishers in London and New York,
- made lithographs of landscape and architecture and
- exhibited many watercolours from his travels around the world.
He was born in 1930 in London, educated at Hertford Grammar School and the Royal College of Art where he was tutored by some of the finest artists of the time, including Edward Bawden and John Nash.
Between 1962 and 2000 Gentleman designed 103 stamps for the Post Office, making him the most prolific and acclaimed stamp designer in Britain.
He still lives and works in London and has his studio at the top of an early Victorian house in Camden Town in-between Camden Lock, Regent's Park and Primrose Hill.

When I was younger I used to be very interested in the topographical drawings which David Gentleman did of various places. I think he probably influenced what I do today with my own sketchbook and the blog which documents them.

David Gentleman's Stamps
David Gentleman designed his first stamps for Royal Mail in 1962 (for National Productivity Year). Since then he has been the most prolific and acclaimed stamp designer in Britain, with 103 issued stamps to his name.
His contribution to pictorial stamp design during the 1960s is described by Douglas Muir, Curator of Philately at the BPMA as “supremely important”.
